The Heartland Environmental Justice Center recently had its first Accountability Board meeting virtually on March 27th. This meeting was primarily an introductory one where everyone introduced themselves and shared their favorite experience with nature as an icebreaker activity.

Jeff Severin, Heartland EJ Center Senior Program Manager, shared information about who we are as an organization and what “accountability” means from our perspective. Following this, the Board was asked to share their thoughts on accountability. Some of the responses included ensuring that funding/money gets to the people who need it most, tracking outcomes to continue the work, and representing people who need support.

This inaugural meeting was an important step forward for the HEJC. By bringing together a diverse group of individuals who are passionate about environmental and energy justice issues in their representative communities, the center can better engage with the communities who are most impacted by environmental injustices across our region.

The HEJC is committed to transparency and ensuring that everyone is on the same page regarding accountability of our work. Learn more about our Accountability Board members on our Accountability Board webpage.
